How it All Started

Back in 1990, Peter Van Alyea’s children were downing 4 burritos/week EACH. He looked at his children’s habits and saw potential customers. Peter began working with his son Chris, to develop a brand offering for a Mexican restaurant in the Convenience Stores. A few months later, our first Aztec Grill opened in our Windsor Chevron.

As everyone knows, a restaurant is not successful if people don’t come back. And people only return when the food is excellent.

Enter: Miguel Alvarez. Miguel brings years of previous experience and authenticity to the Aztec Grill menu, creating fabulous tasting, healthy Mexican food.

Our focus from the beginning has been "fresh", "made to order" and "a healthy alternative" to traditional fast food offerings. Miguel buys only the freshest ingredients from local distributors and demands frequent deliveries to ensure great tasting meals. He has grown the business through constant innovation of menu items, including Monthly Specials and the wildly popular $1 Tacos (available at all Aztec Grill locations).

He has been responsible for hiring experienced cooks to manage the Grills with the precision of a large kitchen. The average time to get your meal: 4 minutes, made to order with fresh ingredients. We have high standards to live up to. We are a Convenience Store; "convenience" being the operative word, with no sacrifice in quality.

What makes "The Grill" (as it is commonly known amongst locals) so amazing is that it is unique. There is no other place like it.

Read what Gary Rea, a Santa Rosa local and prominent businessman, has to say about the Grill.

"In Northern California, it wasn't until the early 1970's that burritos started to be offered as a reasonably quick and wholesome meal. Today they are offered widely, but I have to say that my favorites are those offered at the Aztec Grill locations in the North Bay. In fact, their Tortas are my favorite too. If you are a vegetarian, the Aztec Veggie burritos are the best, hands down, with the fresh sautéed broccoli, squash, and onions. Now if you're a meat eater, do what I do: order the Vegetarian burrito and ask them to add grilled chicken or steak. Or like my friend Alex does: order a veggie burrito and ask them to add chicken AND steak!"

Enthusiastically signed,
Geary Rea
